▂ Joan Mitchell ▂

On my recent trip to New York, I discovered the work of Joan Mitchell while staying in the building Joan's studio use to be in on Saint Marks Place. Her paintings amaze me! Klaus Kertess said it best:

“She transformed the gestural painterliness of Abstract Expressionism into a vocabulary so completely her own that it could become ours as well. And her total absorption of the lessons of Matisse and van Gogh led to a mastery of color inseparable from the movement of light and paint. Her ability to reflect the flow of her consciousness in that of nature, and in paint, is all but unparalleled.”

⧔ Lee Krasner ⧕

A lot has been said about Lee Krasner. While it is true that she was instrumental in her husband Jackson Pollock's career and rise to fame, her own work is as worthy of attention. Her lines move with the jazz like energy of the age. She never stopped exploring and reinventing her approach to image making. I respect Lee's refusal to be defined. As a young painter, Krasner had written words from the poet Arthur Rimbaud on her studio wall that read:

To whom shall I hire myself out?  What beast must I adore?
What holy image is attacked? What hearts shall I break?
What lie must I maintain?  In what blood tread?
